BT and Nscale build 14MW of AI data centers in UK, letting British government and businesses run AI without relying on foreign cloud providers

BT Group partnered with Nscale (a data center company founded in 2024 and backed by Nvidia) to build up to 14 megawatts of AI computing capacity across three UK sites using Nvidia hardware. Nscale raised $2 billion last month at a $14.6 billion valuation.

The centers will support 'sovereign computing' — meaning the UK can now develop and control its own AI infrastructure instead of sending sensitive data to American or Chinese cloud providers. This matters because government agencies and defense contractors can keep classified work on British soil.

UK public sector organizations and businesses can now access high-performance AI computing from a domestic provider, reducing dependency on hyperscalers like AWS or Google Cloud and lowering latency (delay) for services delivered to British users. Procurement teams can now choose a 'made in Britain' AI option for compliance-sensitive work.
