Apple announces improvements to Image Playground at WWDC 2026, addressing prior quality limitations

At WWDC 2026 on Monday, Apple announced improvements to Image Playground, its built-in AI image generation tool for iPhone, which previously generated lower-quality imagery than competitors' offerings.

The updated Image Playground allows users to create images from natural language descriptions, transform photos into different styles, adjust dimensions for specific uses (landscape for websites, portrait for flyers), and generate lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, and contact posters. Photos used with the tool are protected by private cloud compute and are never stored or shared, even with Apple.

Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto demonstrated the feature with examples such as designing a birthday party invitation by generating an image of a friend holding a cake, then adding candles or changing the friend's outfit through natural language prompts.
