On July 14, Anthropic announced Claude for Teachers, a new service designed to provide U.S. K-12 educators with free access to premium Claude features and education-specific tools. Authenticated educators gain access to a skills library tailored for classroom instruction, as well as evidence-based curriculum materials mapped to the learning standards of all 50 U.S. states through connectors to Learning Commons. This allows teachers to create lesson plans aligned to state standards and to differentiate materials for students at different proficiency levels. The service also supports existing trusted curriculum materials and compatible educational tools via connectors.

Key agent features included in Claude for Teachers are Claude Code and Cowork, which enable classroom-scale analysis and task automation. Teachers can, for example, provide the system with folders containing class rosters, diagnostic tests, and attendance data to generate a full picture of class-wide learning progress. The system can also handle routine administrative tasks—such as reviewing daily reflection sheets at a set time each afternoon and adjusting the next day's lesson plan accordingly—reducing manual workload for educators.

Data handling is central to Anthropic's pitch. Data generated through Claude for Teachers is not used to train Anthropic's AI models, and student information is safeguarded under a K-12 data processing addendum aligned with FERPA, the U.S. education privacy law. Access is strictly limited to the educator themselves, and all usage must comply with Anthropic's 18+ age policy. To reinforce its commitment to classroom safety and privacy, Anthropic is collaborating with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to establish industry standards.

Authenticated educators can register at no cost and gain one year of access if they register by June 30, 2027. Currently, the service is available to individual educators; school and district-wide plans are said to arrive soon.

Anthropic's Claude for Teachers represents a direct effort to integrate its AI assistant into U.S. K-12 classrooms with privacy safeguards front and center. The service ties into all 50 states' learning standards via a connector to Learning Commons, a nonprofit organization, allowing teachers to align lesson plans to local requirements without manual cross-referencing. The inclusion of agent functions—Claude Code and Cowork—marks a significant capability expansion: teachers can feed the system folders of rosters, diagnostic tests, and attendance records to gain class-wide learning insights, or set up recurring tasks like automated lesson-plan adjustments based on daily reflection sheets. By committing that data will not train Anthropic's models and that it will conform to FERPA, the company is addressing a major barrier to adoption in education, where student privacy is highly sensitive. Anthropic is also partnering with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to shape broader industry privacy and safety standards for K-12, suggesting a longer-term commitment to this sector.
