Amazon commits $25 billion to Anthropic, securing exclusive access to 5GW of its custom AI chips

Amazon announced an investment of up to $25 billion in Anthropic (an AI safety company that builds Claude, a text-generation AI) and expanded their partnership to guarantee Anthropic receives 5 gigawatts of computing power from Amazon's Trainium chips—custom processors Amazon built to run AI workloads more cheaply than standard hardware.

Unlike generic cloud computing deals, this agreement locks Anthropic into using Amazon's hardware for both current and future chip generations, giving Amazon direct influence over how one of the few major AI competitors to OpenAI builds and deploys its models.

For AWS customers (businesses using Amazon's cloud), this means Anthropic's AI tools will be tightly integrated into Amazon's ecosystem—making Claude easier to access through AWS, potentially cheaper due to hardware optimization, and more directly competitive with Microsoft's integration of OpenAI into Azure cloud services.

Anthropic now has guaranteed computing resources to scale Claude without bidding for chips on the open market, removing a major constraint for AI startups—but locks the company into Amazon's infrastructure for years.
