More than 600 Google staff members sign letter opposing Pentagon's classified use of Google AI models

Over 600 Google employees signed a letter demanding the company's CEO prevent the Pentagon from using Google's AI models for classified work, according to the Washington Post.

The letter was prompted by Anthropic's refusal to allow the US Department of Defense to use its AI for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Google included similar conditions in its proposed Pentagon deal, but the letter argues that allowing classified use would prevent the company from monitoring how its AI models are deployed.

The Pentagon asserted that it should have the freedom to use AI for 'all lawful uses.'
