Amazon is exploring selling its homemade AI chips to competitors, potentially creating a $50 billion（約8兆円） revenue stream that could challenge Nvidia's dominance.

What happened: Amazon Web Services' AI chief Peter DeSantis told Bloomberg that AWS is in early-stage talks to sell its Trainium AI chip to other companies for use in data centers. CEO Andy Jassy outlined the opportunity in his April shareholder letter, noting that if AWS's chip business were standalone and sold chips produced this year to AWS and other third parties, the annual run rate would be ~$50 billion（約8兆円）.

Why it matters: AWS has historically kept its chips for internal use only, profiting from a cascade of additional services—storage, security, networking, monitoring—that customers must buy alongside chip capacity. A $50 billion（約8兆円） chip business would rival Intel's annual revenues and represent a direct incursion into Nvidia's market. However, AWS faces a genuine constraint: its current Trainium chip capacity sold out almost instantly, as did the next-generation Trainium4 (which won't ship for over a year), so selling externally would require AWS to manufacture a surplus or divert supply from waiting customers.

AWS would need to secure additional production from partners such as TSMC, which has recently become Nvidia's largest customer—making it difficult for AWS to elbow out room for new AI chip orders.
