Pope Leo XIV calls for AI to be 'disarmed' to prevent it from dominating humanity

Pope Leo XIV said in a new encyclical on Monday that artificial intelligence should be 'disarmed' to protect humanity from its dangers, stating the technology needs to be freed from monopolistic control and shifting away from use for geopolitical or commercial gains.

The pope framed 'disarming' AI as discrediting the assumption that technical power automatically confers the right to govern, while emphasizing that disarming does not mean rejecting technology itself.

The address included a video presentation with images of the Industrial Revolution, World War II, and the Berlin Wall falling, and called for making AI more 'human-friendly.'
