What happened: Jie Tang, CEO of Chinese AI startup Z.ai (formerly Zhipu AI), responded to Elon Musk's prediction that a Chinese rival to Anthropic's Fable 5 would arrive in Q1, saying it won't take that long. Z.ai released GLM-5.2 on June 16, 2026, which the company's benchmarks show has nearly the same performance as Anthropic's Opus 4.7 to 4.8 and has consistently outperformed OpenAI's GPT-5.5 and Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro.
