Image Generation

The Gist

A new round of AI image-model comparisons adds Meta, Seedream, and Grok, while a former large-scale art scraper now builds a protection tool. Adobe embeds an AI assistant editor into Photoshop, and Apple's Luce AI can turn photos into relightable 3D assets, but the spread of fakes is eroding trust in online animal videos. This week’s tools push creative automation forward, yet the credibility gap in visual content is the real challenge to solve first.

Today's Stories

  1. 1

33 image models compared: Meta, Seedream, Grok added

A new AI image benchmark compares 33 image models from 8 providers, adding Meta Muse Image 1.0, Seedream 5.0 Pro, and Grok Imagine Image 2.0. The cheapest model, Flux Fast Schnell, costs $0.0025 per image, while the priciest, Recraft 4 Pro, costs $0.25 — a 100x difference, highlighting wide cost variation.

The full report, which includes price, latency, and test images, is available on the author's blog.

Massive Scraping of Artists' Works Leads to Perpetrator Helping Build Protection Tool

Image-sharing app Cara was hit by large-scale scraping attacks three times since August 13. The first incident saw 120,000 works published on Reddit as a 12-terabyte archive. Cara is a platform home to some 1.5 million artists opposed to unauthorized use of their work in AI training. Founder Jingna Zhang notes that legal protections have not kept pace and that scraping can be justified as “technically legal.” Domestic artists are also seen as potentially vulnerable to similar incidents.

The perpetrator of the first attack is a student named “Heft,” who is now co-developing an open-source tracking tool called “Lantern” with Zhang. The tool notifies artists when their work appears in new AI image datasets.

AWS Quick and fal unite for agentic creative workflows

AWS announced an integration where Amazon Quick, an agentic AI workspace, connects to fal's generative media platform via Model Context Protocol (MCP). This enables creators to run workflows like an eight-panel storyboard or a music-video concept within one interactive session. Creative teams face demand that exceeds capacity—78% of creative leaders report this—and faster generation alone doesn't solve workflow fragmentation. The integration retains context across steps, adds human approval gates, and packages repeatable processes as shareable Skills.

The setup requires a fal account and API key, plus permission to add a remote MCP connector in Amazon Quick. The storyboard workflow uses FLUX.1 Kontext for reference-guided panel generation.

  4. 4

Adobe adds AI Assistant Editor to Photoshop

Adobe is rolling out an AI-heavy update for Photoshop, including a new "optional" interface called the "AI Assisted Editor" view. It is launching in beta and shows all AI features in a single toolbar, such as prompt-based editing, background remover, and an AI image extender. Adobe is also adding a "markup" feature that lets you draw on an image to tell the AI assistant what to change, like recoloring areas or sketching arrows. This reduces the need for text prompts, making AI editing more visual and accessible.

The update includes an enhanced "Instruct Edit with Masks" feature. Adobe says its Firefly Image 5 model now understands the entire image context, so you can describe changes like "opening closed eyes" without manually marking areas.

Apple's Luce AI turns photos into relightable 3D assets

Apple researchers introduced Luce, a 3D representation that combines geometry and PBR materials into a voxelized multimodal Gaussian cloud. It generates 3D assets from a single image, using a rectified-flow transformer to create a latent representation. Luce achieves state-of-the-art single-image-to-3D generation on the Toys4K benchmark, improving FID by 28% over the strongest baseline. It also outperforms the best baseline on a new benchmark of AI-generated images, with a CLIP image-alignment score of 0.8519 vs. 0.8299.

Luce preserves fine details like text, logos, and inscriptions, and it can output either relightable PBR Gaussians or an optional textured mesh with tangent-space normal map. This could make AI-generated 3D assets more usable in standard rendering pipelines.

  6. 6

AI fakes are ruining trust in online animal content

AI-generated animal videos and pictures, from polar bear rescues to found pets, are so prevalent that viewers no longer take animal posts at face value. One lost cat owner received a scam photo that ChatGPT confirmed it had generated, nearly identical to her original poster. The flood of fakes frustrates viewers and harms authentic creators like We Animals, which now faces AI accusations despite banning the technology. Experts like Oscar Horta worry that synthetic rescue videos will lead people to question real rescue efforts and hamper fundraising, especially as extreme weather events become more common.

New laws in California and the EU require popular AI image generators to embed invisible tags, and social platforms must label AI content. Integrating verification tools into messaging apps and browsers, plus updates to model guidelines as proposed by Jeff Sebo, could help restore trust.

What to Watch

Watch for AI image tools moving beyond static pictures—toward 3D assets and context-aware editing—while new laws push invisible watermarks, making it easier to spot and trace AI-generated visuals across the web.
