AI Coding Assistants

The Gist

Nvidia's Brian Catanzaro says AI computing costs now exceed engineer salaries, even as Simon Willison argues AI coding agents won't replace software engineers. Meanwhile, Cognition has its Devin agent test its own work using GPT-6 Astra, and new dialogue-driven agents can now build websites on their own.

Today's Stories

  1. 1

Nvidia's Brian Catanzaro: AI costs now outstrip engineer salaries

Nvidia VP Brian Catanzaro said his team's computing costs now far exceed what it pays the employees using that AI. Uber's CTO said the company burned its entire 2026 AI coding budget in just four months. Uber's engineers went from 84% using Claude Code by March to roughly 70% of committed code being AI-generated, yet COO Andrew MacDonald said token usage did not directly translate into useful features.

Whether AI spending ever pays off hinges on connecting token consumption to real output. Nvidia's Jensen Huang wants engineers earning $500,000 a year to consume at least $250,000 worth of AI tokens annually.

  2. 2

AI agents now build websites via dialogue, three types emerge

AI agents have reached the stage where they can handle everything from sitemap design to copywriting, design, code implementation, and publication through conversation, split into three types: interactive site builders (Lolipop! AI Homepage, Wix, STUDIO, 10Web), coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, v0, Bolt.new), and general-purpose agents (Manus). Companies without web production staff can now create prototypes in-house before waiting for outsourcing quotes, with tool costs ranging from around 550 yen to 2,000 yen monthly for builders or $20 to $30 monthly for coding agents, versus 300,000 to 10 million yen or more for outsourced production.

Success hinges on whether companies define site goals in one line and prepare company-specific materials before generation, as AI agents fill gaps with generic content when given insufficient input; watch the three company examples—Tarental (2-day renewal), ShareWis (WordPress to static migration), and LIG (design comp to implementation)—for real-world lessons.

  3. 3

Simon Willison: AI coding agents won't end software engineers

Simon Willison wrote that many people, himself included, have gone through an existential crisis when a coding agent does a week of work in an hour, and come out the other side. The skill of translating an exact specification into decent code is no longer unique, so Willison says engineers who accept that can bring their experience to a larger set of problems.

The test is whether engineers can master these new tools rather than resist a changing profession. Willison notes the tools and languages of software engineering have rarely stayed stable beyond about a five year time horizon.

  4. 4

Cognition has Devin test its own work with GPT-6 Astra

Cognition is applying GPT-6 Astra across Devin, its CLI and desktop products. In one example, Devin tested an iPhone game, Otter Run, and returned a simulator recording plus a report. As Cognition's teams write more code, reviewing it became a challenge. Yan says Astra's ability to test and prove its work is one of the big improvements over prior models.

Yan says Cognition expects to manually look at less code over time and ship more, so the test is whether Devin's recordings and reports reduce manual code examination. Customer bug screenshots are already fixed and returned as screenshots.

Nikkei Crosstech NEXT Tokyo 2026 opens, AI-driven development in focus

The Nikkei Crosstech NEXT Tokyo 2026 conference has opened, with a focus on AI-driven development. The event is described as a chance to experience the power of AI-driven development firsthand.

The conference is framed around hands-on experience, so its impact hinges on what attendees take away from the sessions.

  6. 6

The Boring Co. Tops $3B Week With $23B Valuation

The Boring Co. raised a $3 billion Series D led by the United Arab Emirates, valuing the tunnelling company at $23 billion. Three others also raised $1 billion or more: Cognition, Motive and Stoke Space. Four companies hit $1 billion-plus in a single U.S. week. The Boring Co.'s total funding rose to nearly $3.9 billion, and Cognition jumped to a $48 billion valuation on a $2 billion round.

Whether the surge trails into next week hinges on SpaceX-style space and defense demand. Watch Suniva's planned South Carolina facility, which would more than quadruple its manufacturing capacity.

What to Watch

Going forward, watch whether AI spending turns into real results: how much work AI actually produces, whether companies set clear goals and feed AI their own materials, and whether engineers adapt to fast-changing tools. Also keep an eye on Devin reducing the need to read code by hand, what attendees bring back from hands-on conferences, and whether space and defense demand drives the next surge—including Suniva's planned South Carolina factory.
