AI Coding Assistants

The Gist

AI coding assistants are spreading into more tools and workflows, from IBM's Db2 and Unity's game engine to NTT Docomo's robot pipeline built in three days. But an Indeed trial found that while AI speeds up writing code, human design has become the new bottleneck.

Today's Stories

  1. 1

High schooler asks for feedback on C++ autograd project

A third-year high school student implemented a simple tensor library and autograd in C++ and shared the GitHub project autograd_in_cpp on r/MachineLearning, asking for advice. Autograd is the core mechanism behind training neural networks, so building one from scratch in C++ suggests the student is learning the fundamentals rather than only using existing frameworks.

The project is described as very simple, so its value hinges on whether experienced practitioners respond with constructive feedback on the design and code.

  2. 2

Fintech devs push AI into Coder space instances, code fixes

A software engineer at a large US enterprise fintech company says the firm spent the last 12 months pushing developers to use AI and agentic programs — first in the IDE, then Coder space instances with cloud agents, and now code vulnerability remediation. The push goes beyond developer productivity, raising the question of how to design architectures so sensitive financial data does not unnecessarily leave the environment in regulated industries like fintech and healthcare.

The concern is that even a little PII slipping into the cloud repeatedly over a long-running integration could add up, so the test is how companies handle PII when data does have to leave.

  3. 3

IBM Db2 Genius Hub 1.1.5 Adds CLI and Gemini Models

IBM launched Db2 Genius Hub 1.1.5 with a new Db2 Genius CLI that lets developers and DBAs ask database questions in plain English from the terminal, plus log-based alerting, HashiCorp Vault integration for credentials, predictive graphs in AI conversations, and Gemini models via Google Cloud Vertex AI. These features bring AI assistance directly into existing developer and DBA workflows, which may help teams identify issues earlier, manage credentials centrally, and choose preferred enterprise AI models without switching tools.

The shift from reactive troubleshooting to proactive database management hinges on whether teams adopt the new CLI and alerting schedule, and whether organizations using Vertex AI actually select Gemini alongside Claude.

  4. 4

AI speeds coding, but インディード trial finds design is the new bottleneck

Indeed Recruit Technologies ran a one-year internal trial on using AI for software implementation, and reported that the constraint after faster coding shifted upstream to design and decision-making. If coding is no longer the slow step, teams may find their real delays sit in requirements, design choices and approvals — so speeding up coding alone may not shorten delivery.

The finding comes from a single company's internal trial, so the test is whether other organizations see the same upstream bottleneck. The body does not give a rollout date or further figures.

  5. 5

NTTドコモ builds robot ML pipeline in 3 days with AI-DLC

NTT Docomo's MIT Division joined AWS's AI-DLC Train The Trainer and built a robot-arm pipeline — imitation learning (IL) refined by reinforcement learning (RL) — in 3 days, using the RPD (Refined Policy Distillation) approach. The Inception phase alone surfaced 11 inconsistencies and produced 30+ structured documents, suggesting AI-DLC can cut rework in ML projects where design is uncertain and knowledge is scattered.

Whether the framework holds in parallel team development is untested — the article's second part reports on Team Pink and Team Blue running the pipeline side by side.

  6. 6

Unity ships Claude Code and Codex plugins to fix stale AI skills

Unity released official plugins for Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, giving agents skills its own teams write and maintain. The Codex version launches with 31 skills covering interfaces, 2D graphics, URP, audio, and in-app purchases. According to Unity, general-purpose agents typically pick up forum posts and tutorials for outdated engine versions whose code may compile but often doesn't work as intended.

The plugins run on Unity 6 and up, so older projects may not be covered. In Codex they install with a click; in Claude Code via npm.

What to Watch

The coming months will show whether experienced developers actually adopt these early projects and give useful feedback, and whether more companies confirm the bottleneck seen in one internal trial. The bigger test is trust: how carefully organizations handle personal data that leaves their systems, and whether teams really switch to the new tools and models on offer.
