Image Generation

The Gist

OpenAI is buying Glass Imaging for over $300 million, while Hitachi's new re-encoding technique cuts image AI processing time in half. Elsewhere, a Superpose AI camera app from ex-TikTok developers has already hit 22,000 downloads, and TwelveLabs' Marengo Embed 3.0 is now available in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases.

Today's Stories

  1. 1

Suica penguin heir: fan art reshapes 3 candidate vote by Sept 23

On September 8, JR East unveiled three candidate successors to the Suica penguin — a squirrel, a rabbit, and an orange mole-in-a-pouch character — and opened voting through September 23. Interest was so heavy the site hit a system error on day one. After fans said "give the penguin back," user fan art and generative-AI reinterpretations spread overnight, shifting reactions to "I've grown attached" and "adopt all three" — a shift the company did not campaign for.

The winning design is decided by the most votes, so the outcome hinges on whether the fan-art momentum carries to the ballot. Watch for the September 23 voting deadline.

  2. 2

Superpose AI camera app from ex-TikTok duo hits 22,000 downloads

Former TikTok employees Melody Chu and Jing Liu launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that generates four AI-suggested poses from a selfie or a friend's photo. It launched in July with over 22,000 downloads and more than 190,000 poses generated. Unlike Google's Camera Coach on Pixel and Adobe's experimental camera app, Superpose focuses only on real-life portrait photos, not AI backgrounds or fantastical scenes. It gives five free generations daily, with packs at $2.99 and $9.99.

Superpose says it is working on generation styles, personalization, and coaching users from the viewfinder. Watch whether that work addresses uncanny poses Chu acknowledged, and whether it can hold its niche as rivals enter AI-guided photography.

  3. 3

Suzuki's Osamu Suzuki sayings become karuta cards, AI draws

Sayings attributed to Suzuki Motor's late chairman Osamu Suzuki have been turned into a karuta card game. The set includes lines like "I'm the old man of a small-to-medium business" and "Then why not drop the engine?" The illustrations for the karuta cards were produced using AI, per the report. That moves an AI-generated artwork decision into a consumer product tied to a specific corporate legacy.

  4. 4

OpenAI buys Glass Imaging for over $300 million

OpenAI acquired Glass Imaging, a Los Altos startup founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, in a deal worth over $300 million per The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging uses neural networks to improve images as the shutter clicks, not in post-editing. It had raised about $30 million before this deal.

The deal's link to OpenAI's rumored hardware push is unconfirmed — OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  5. 5

Hitachi unveils selective re-encoding that halves ViT image AI processing time

Hitachi announced on August 25, 2026 a selective re-encoding technology that reduces the average processing time for image data in AI analysis by half while maintaining accuracy, verified using Vision Transformer (ViT). Previously, ViT generated tokens for the entire image, leaving the processing time and computational load as a major challenge; the new method re-encodes only the tokens corresponding to regions deemed necessary, cutting token counts and halving processing time.

The value of the technology will be tested in real-world use cases, starting with image and video recognition AI, toward application to AI and social infrastructure; watch for deployment linked to Hitachi's AI strategy 'Lumada 3.0'.

TwelveLabs Marengo Embed 3.0 lands in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases

AWS announced the general availability of TwelveLabs Marengo Embed 3.0 as an embedding model in Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases, a fully managed RAG service that ingests video (MP4, MOV), images (JPEG, PNG), and audio. Previously, semantic search over video meant stitching together transcription, frame extraction, embedding models, vector databases, and synchronization logic; AWS says Managed MKB now handles segmentation, frame sampling, and transcription internally.

Availability is limited to the US East (N. Virginia) and US West (N. California) Regions, so the test is whether AWS expands to more Regions. Embeddings generation with Marengo Embed 3.0 is charged at the standard Amazon Bedrock model invocation rate.

What to Watch

Watch whether the fan-art momentum carries through to the September 23 voting deadline, and whether Superpose's work on generation styles, personalization, and viewfinder coaching solves the uncanny poses it has acknowledged as rivals enter AI-guided photography. Also keep an eye on whether AWS expands beyond the US East (N. Virginia) and US West (N. California) Regions, and on real-world deployments tied to Hitachi's Lumada 3.0 AI strategy.
