Anthropic filed its S-1 for a blockbuster AI IPO, joining SpaceXAI as the second major AI listing this year, with the filing listing extensive risks including massive compute purchases and uncertain customer spending.
Why it matters
The nearly 70,000-word filing shows Anthropic is making huge bets on buying computing power while acknowledging it is uncertain how long customers will keep spending on AI in the face of dubious returns, even as it flags catastrophic risks to humanity.

Anthropic's filing comes after SpaceXAI's AI IPO earlier this year, and SpaceXAI is now a major supplier of Anthropic's compute, making the two offerings financially intertwined. The filing itself is a risk document: nearly 70,000 words that include huge bets on computing power, uncertainty about how long customers will keep spending, and the standard warning of catastrophic risks to humanity. What the filing does not mention, according to Jason Bloomberg, is that AI today lacks the economies of scale that made software so lucrative.
Anthropic is not alone in amassing cash for AI infrastructure. Meta this week said it will issue $95 billion in nonvoting stock to build even more. Few, least of all Nvidia, seem to think the AI and data center backlash will dent this investment. But SpaceX CEO Elon Musk predicted this week, with Gartner agreeing, that many AI neoclouds will go belly-up when the music stops.
Investor skittishness is already visible elsewhere. Alphabet's stock swooned more than 12% Thursday, vaporizing more than $500 billion in market value, as it reported a slow quarter for search and ads. Amazon stock fell on concerns it could be spending too much on infrastructure. Intel stock plunged more than 20% after its earnings report on concerns the PC business is slowing, and Fortinet also fell more than 20% following a slightly lower outlook.
