What happened
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, saying it bests GPT-5.6 Terra by 15 percentage points on the Agents’ Last Exam computer-use benchmark at about one-third the cost. Standard API prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Why it matters
Lower prices and higher efficiency on office-style computer tasks could make it cheaper for developers to automate high-volume work such as reading invoices and entering details into accounting software.
What to watch
Starting today, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to all Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex and through the OpenAI API.
WHO IT HITSDevelopers and teams automating high-volume office work—such as invoice processing and accounting data entry—stand to face lower per-task costs, while ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users get the model immediately.

OpenAI’s introduction of GPT-6.1 Terra fits a pattern it describes as advancing the cost-intelligence frontier across its model families. The company positions the release as a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra, aimed at communication and computer-based tasks that fill the workday—drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms, and editing videos—rather than at the most complex coding work, where OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice.
The benchmark results OpenAI reports are framed around cost as much as capability. On Agents’ Last Exam, Terra scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort while costing about one-third as much, and OpenAI says it performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth its price per token. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Terra solves 50.3% of tasks at maximum reasoning effort, more than double GPT-5.6 Terra’s published score of 21.5%.
OpenAI also ties the release to its year-long effort to reduce hallucinations and factual errors. On its internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra, a drop of nearly 37 percentage points, while at maximum effort it fell 18 percentage points to 4.3%. The company says Terra meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework.
