What happened
Google Gemini now lets all users generate, preview, and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code directly in chats, starting today.
Why it matters
Gemini can now modify files without leaving the chat, and users can expand documents to full-screen or highlight text and tables to ask Gemini to make changes.
WHO IT HITSThis lands on Gemini users such as analysts, students, and knowledge workers who draft documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, letting them edit files inside the chat instead of switching to Google Workspace apps.

Google added support for generating and downloading files in Gemini earlier this year, and the new editing capabilities extend that so users can tweak files without leaving the Gemini app. The feature set includes the ability to expand documents in full-screen mode and to highlight text in files to ask Gemini questions or prompt changes, such as highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph.
The launch also follows Anthropic's release earlier this year of a feature that allows users to generate and edit documents and presentations in Claude chats, placing Gemini's file editing alongside a similar capability from a rival AI assistant. Google notes that PDF previews and editing work on both the web and mobile, while all other file formats are only in the web version for now.
