On October 14, Booking Holdings announced a planned $100 million investment in Vayo, a personal travel agent entering private beta, following its September 29 launch of Lola, another AI-driven booking experience.
Why it matters
The $100 million is small against Booking's approximately $120.73 billion equity valuation, so its significance rests on whether Booking stays the destination for travel transactions as AI agents take over discovery, per the company's framing.

Booking's move comes as AI agents increasingly threaten the route to the customer, not hotel demand itself. The concern is that an agent could capture the customer relationship, compare offers, and direct transactions to whichever supplier pays the lowest effective distribution cost, a worry that intensified after Meta's Muse launch in September. Booking's defenses include fragmented accommodation inventory, loyalty benefits, payment infrastructure, and connected trip services, alongside its own AI efforts.
The financial picture offers some cushion. In the second quarter of 2026, room nights grew 5%, gross bookings rose 9%, and adjusted EBITDA increased 9% to approximately $2.6 billion. Adjusted EPS advanced 15%, helped by a 6% lower average share count. Management also raised its expected annual transformation savings run rate to $650 million from $550 million, with most incremental savings anticipated in 2027.
Still, Booking carries a customer-acquisition bill. Second-quarter marketing expense rose 11%, faster than gross bookings, while mobile applications accounted for a high-50% share of room nights and the direct-to-consumer share remained in the mid-60% range. Retaining direct traffic matters because a higher proportion of paid referrals could reduce the economics of each hotel night even if bookings continue to rise.
