Nvidia buys Hugging Face for $13B

Hugging Face, founded in 2016 as a small startup, has grown into a central repository for AI developers, hosting open-weight models that offer more transparency and customization than closed alternatives. Nvidia's acquisition for $12.93 billion marks a major exit for the founders, who had previously turned down investment offers to maintain independence. The deal aligns with Nvidia's strategy to secure a future revenue stream from open-weight models, as its large closed-source customers like OpenAI and Microsoft are developing their own chips. The acquisition raises concerns about whether Hugging Face's model library, particularly its Transformers library, will subtly favor Nvidia hardware, as some creators already suspect a natural bias. Nvidia, which is already a major contributor to the platform with over 500 models and 250 datasets, may now also leverage its ownership to promote its offerings. For businesses, the deal could lower barriers to adopting open-source AI, potentially expanding use cases.
