Developers using Claude agents heavily had warned of steep cost increases under the new pricing model. In April, Anthropic's Head of Claude Code Boris Cherny acknowledged that subscriptions 'weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools,' signaling that the company had been aware of a mismatch between how agents consume resources and how its subscription pricing was structured.

This reprieve appears temporary. Cherny stated that Anthropic wants to 'be intentional in managing our growth to continue to serve our customers sustainably long-term,' suggesting developers should expect the pricing pressure to return once the company finalizes its plan. Anthropic is also preparing for a possible initial public stock offering by filing confidential papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
