DeepSeek releases new AI model at a fraction of OpenAI's price, challenging U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, unveiled its newest model with full compatibility for Huawei chips and dramatically undercut pricing compared to OpenAI and Anthropic — the two U.S. leaders. The performance gap between DeepSeek and top American models has narrowed significantly, suggesting Chinese alternatives can now match or approach what cost 10–100× more just months ago.

DeepSeek's model runs efficiently on Huawei hardware (chips made outside U.S. supply chains) and carries rock-bottom prices. For businesses and developers, this means AI capabilities that previously required expensive subscriptions are now accessible to smaller teams, startups, and price-sensitive markets — especially in China and regions affected by U.S. export restrictions.

This threatens the pricing power and market dominance of OpenAI and Anthropic, which have built billion-dollar valuations partly on being the only viable options for high-performance AI. If DeepSeek delivers comparable results for 1/10th the cost, enterprises will face real pressure to switch, and startups will no longer need deep pockets to compete on AI features.
