Force Feedback study: 63% recover in a day, vs 28% without, Intuitive says

Intuitive Surgical is positioning software, AI and data as the differentiators for its da Vinci ecosystem as robotic surgery competition tightens. In the second quarter, the company pointed to growing adoption of My Intuitive Surgical+, an integrated da Vinci 5 offering combining telepresence, simulation and AI-driven case insights. Although the initial renewal cohort was small, no customers opted out — an early signal of acceptance for the platform's broader digital capabilities.

The company is also using da Vinci 5's computing power to generate a continuing stream of software enhancements. More than 100 updates are planned, with the first phase centered on telepresence, simulation-based training and care-team workflow. Several are designed to improve usability and efficiency, such as tools that cut communication between surgeons and care teams, allow multiple robotic arms to be adjusted before or during procedures, and provide a digital ruler for intraoperative measurements. Management believes these recurring upgrades can progressively increase da Vinci 5's attractiveness and support a multi-year upgrade cycle.

Force Feedback adds another layer of differentiation. Intuitive Surgical reported that a prospective study associated its use with faster return of bowel function following partial and radical nephrectomy, with 63% of patients recovering within one day versus 28% without it. Force Feedback instruments are excluded from the company's extended-use program, underscoring their role as an innovation-driven component. With a nearly 13,000-system installed base and a broad Gen 4 ecosystem, these innovations may compound — potentially keeping Intuitive ahead of insurgent companies focused solely on robotic hardware. The outcome hinges on whether planned updates translate into renewed customer upgrades.
