What happened
Microsoft showed Copilot gaining access to local files and the ability to act across the OS. Jacob Andreou demoed its Autopilot tool finding tax documents and drafting an email.
Why it matters
Copilot could move from answering questions to completing multi-step tasks on its own, such as gathering files and preparing messages, which may change how much users hand over to the assistant.
What to watch
The test is whether these features work reliably outside a scripted demo. Andreou said they will reach Copilot over the "next couple months."
WHO IT HITSEveryday Windows users may soon hand routine file chores — locating documents, renaming them, and drafting emails — to Copilot, while IT teams supporting those machines will face new questions about what the assistant can reach and do.

Microsoft used its Windows and Surface event to frame Copilot less as a chatbot and more as an assistant that reaches into the machine itself. The company's label for this is "Hybrid Intelligence," which it describes as apps and tools relying on a mix of local and cloud AI models to get tasks done.
The demo put a concrete face on that idea: Jacob Andreou, Microsoft's EVP of Copilot, had the company's Autopilot tool track down tax documents across folders, rename and zip them, and draft an email to his accountant with the files attached. That is a chain of actions rather than a single answer, and it is the sort of work that has so far required a person to click through each step.
Microsoft paired the AI demo with a smaller showcase for Windows itself — a new search bar that can take quick actions like turning on dark mode or adjusting mic volume with an in-line slider, arriving this fall on Windows 11 PCs. What the Autopilot demo does not settle is reliability outside a staged video, so the real test looks to be whether the promised rollout, which Andreou put at the "next couple months," delivers that same multi-step behavior on ordinary machines.
