Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, imposed strict limits on OpenClaw—a popular AI agent tool (software that makes decisions and takes actions on its own) that surged in use this year—and began charging users significantly more to continue using Claude to power their agents. The company cited unsustainable server costs and the need to become profitable.
Unlike Claude's standard subscription model, which charges per month, these third-party agent tools created extreme spikes in usage that Anthropic's systems weren't designed to handle. By forcing agent creators to pay premium rates for heavy usage, Anthropic is shifting costs directly to the builders who profited most from Claude's capabilities.
Millions of non-technical users who rely on OpenClaw agents to automate tasks—from business workflows to coding help—now face reduced functionality or must wait for their tool creators to absorb the new costs or pass them on. This marks the first time a major AI company has publicly squeezed out a viral third-party ecosystem by restricting access and raising prices, signaling that free or cheap AI tools may have a shorter lifespan than users expect.
