The arrangement did not come from nowhere. OpenAI's exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft ended in April, and Amazon Web Services began offering OpenAI models shortly afterward. Adding Google Cloud completes a set that now covers all three major U.S. cloud infrastructure providers, turning what was a single-channel relationship into a multi-cloud distribution network.
The deal also builds on an existing tie-up. OpenAI already runs ChatGPT and its application programming interface on Google Cloud infrastructure, so this agreement layers a sales channel on top of that computing relationship: Google's customers can now buy OpenAI models through the same marketplace and spending commitments they already use.
For Google, the appeal appears to be breadth. Its cloud platform already sells its own Gemini models, and adding a competitor's technology could draw businesses that want more than one AI provider without locking into a single ecosystem. Google Cloud's growth has been accelerating — annualized revenue growth reached about 82% in the second quarter, up from 63% in the first quarter, against 37% at Amazon and 42% at Microsoft, according to CNBC figures cited. How much of that marketplace traffic OpenAI captures is not disclosed.
