ChatGPT and Gemini both cross 1 billion monthly users

ChatGPT and Gemini have both reached 1 billion users, marking a major inflection point in the AI chatbot race. OpenAI announced the milestone in a blog post on August 6th, with spokesperson Lindsay McCallum confirming that ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users some time ago and hit 1 billion weekly users in July. The announcement was notably understated, buried in an otherwise routine post about how people use AI. External data had suggested ChatGPT crossed 1 billion users as early as June, but OpenAI did not formally announce it until August.

Google's announcement came this week through CEO Sundar Pichai, who posted on X that a billion people are using Gemini every month and that Gemini is Google's fastest-growing product ever. Google disclosed earlier milestones: 750 million monthly users in February and 950 million in late July, before reaching 1 billion last week. The growth trajectory reveals diverging momentum. ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February and reached 1 billion monthly users five months later—a slowdown from its earlier reputation as the fastest-growing software ever. Gemini, meanwhile, grew from 750 million to 1 billion in roughly the same period, suggesting faster growth despite starting from a lower baseline.

The user composition of each platform reflects different business models. Gemini has more than 100 million active users on iOS, which by extension means the vast majority of its 1 billion users are Android users, benefiting from preinstallation on Android phones. OpenAI's ChatGPT lacks this structural advantage, which explains the company's aggressive push into building its own hardware. Claude, Anthropic's chatbot competitor, appears to be growing quickly as well, but Anthropic does not disclose user numbers; estimates place Claude in the tens of millions.

The broader AI market has tightened significantly. Anthropic's Claude Code became a phenomenon that forced OpenAI to develop a competing product, Codex. Google has been integrating Gemini into seemingly every surface of its products, from search to Gmail. The companies' models have leapfrogged each other in capabilities, and all three now face competition from models from China. For years, ChatGPT was the de facto brand for AI chatbots and remains widely known and popular, but its once commanding lead has largely evaporated. As Gemini and ChatGPT both cross 1 billion users, the focus shifts from growth metrics to deeper questions: how do these companies monetize these massive audiences, and what compelling use cases will keep users engaged?
