SpaceX shares rose more than 5% on Friday after Starship's first trip to Earth orbit and a week of launches, as Musk admitted Grok 4.7 trails Anthropic's Opus 5.5.
Why it matters
By Musk's own account, Grok still trails overall and may not reach the frontier until next year.

SpaceX just had a huge week on the rocket side, with Starship reaching Earth orbit for the first time and deploying all 26 Starlink V3 satellites, Dragon carrying NASA's Crew-13 astronauts to the ISS, and a rideshare mission putting a Project Suncatcher satellite into orbit for Alphabet. Those successes lifted shares more than 5% on Friday morning. But the AI side of SpaceX got some cold water, as Decoder host Nilay Patel said on the latest episode that Musk is "just behind" in AI. Patel pointed to Musk's own words, and Musk said in a recent interview with China Media Group that Grok 4.7 isn't as good as Anthropic's new Opus 5.5. This admission comes as SpaceX's AI business already brings in serious money from renting out computing power, and that money doesn't depend on Grok beating anyone. Anthropic isn't standing still either, as Opus 5.5 only came out on Sept. 22, and the frontier will likely have moved by the time Grok gets there.
