Microsoft cancels most Claude Code licenses after employees' usage exceeded costs; Uber similarly exhausted 2026 AI budget in four months.

Microsoft has begun canceling most of its direct Claude Code licenses and moving engineers toward GitHub Copilot CLI, six months after opening access to Claude Code to thousands of developers, project managers, designers, and other employees.

Uber's CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga reported in April that the firm had already burnt through its entire 2026 AI coding tools budget in just four months, after the company had actively incentivized adoption through internal leaderboards ranking teams by AI tool usage.

Goldman Sachs forecasted that agentic AI could drive a 24-fold increase in token consumption by 2030, reaching 120 quadrillion tokens per month. Gartner predicted that by 2030, inference on a one-trillion-parameter LLM will cost AI firms nearly 90% less than in 2025, but warned that cheaper tokens will not translate to cheaper enterprise AI because agentic models require far more tokens per task.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said he thinks 100 AI agents will one day work alongside every employee at his company, but rising token consumption could result in substantially higher bills than executives anticipate.
