Google upgrades Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash as default in AI Mode and introduces AI agents for continuous information monitoring

Google is upgrading Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash — its newest Flash model for agents and coding — as the new default model in AI Mode globally, starting today. AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users, with queries more than doubling every quarter since launch.

The company is introducing the biggest upgrade to its Search box in over 25 years, now reimagined with AI. The new Search box dynamically expands to help you describe what you need, offers AI-powered suggestions beyond autocomplete, and lets you search using text, images, files, videos or Chrome tabs as inputs.

Google is entering the era of Search agents — AI systems that reason across information to find exactly what you need. Information agents will monitor the web 24/7 for changes related to your specific question and send you synthesized updates, launching first for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers this summer.

Additional agentic capabilities rolling out to everyone in the U.S. this summer include booking local experiences and services, and for select categories like home repair, beauty or pet care, the ability to ask Google to call businesses on your behalf. Generative UI capabilities — custom interactive tools, simulations, and visual components built in real-time — will be free for everyone in Search this summer.
