Backflip AI converts 3D scans to editable CAD in minutes

Backflip AI, active since December 2024 and backed by $30 million in funding, has released its second AI model focused on a specific manufacturing pain point: converting 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models. The company claims to compress a process that normally takes hours and requires deep CAD expertise down to just a few minutes.

The technical distinction matters. Traditional AI-generated CAD outputs are triangle-based surface meshes—geometry that is frozen and tedious to modify. Backflip's model instead produces actual CAD operations: extrusions, revolutions, and similar parametric constructs that remain fully editable within standard CAD software. This design choice means users can refine, adapt, and reuse the generated models rather than treat them as read-only visualizations.

According to CEO Greg Mark, the market opportunity is substantial. Most factories maintain digital CAD models for less than one percent of their parts inventory. In automotive and aerospace—industries where digitization directly supports prototyping and new-part design—this gap translates into lost efficiency and duplicated manual work. Backflip's tool targets that gap by making it faster and cheaper to bring existing physical components into the digital design pipeline.

The product integrates as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion, the cloud-native CAD platform widely used in manufacturing. Pricing follows a freemium model: users receive four free reconstructions; additional scans cost $20 per month on the paid tier. This approach lets manufacturers test the tool on a small batch of components before committing to a subscription, reducing adoption friction.
