What happened
Anthropic's "Wrap-Up Allowance" lets Claude Code keep going briefly after the 5-hour limit, showing "Usage limit reached · wrapping up." It requires version 2.1.277 or later.
Why it matters
Paid users who had files left half-rewritten and broken when the limit hit now get a tidier stopping point, though the allowance is small and may not be enough to finish the job.
What to watch
Pro users get it only once a week, and the new work still counts toward the weekly limit. The allowance is not a plan feature and Anthropic may change or end it without notice.
WHO IT HITSFreelance and in-house developers on paid Claude Code plans who run long edits are the ones affected, since they are the group that previously had work cut off mid-rewrite. API-key and Bedrock/Vertex AI users get nothing from this change.

The complaint behind this change is a familiar one for anyone on a paid Claude Code plan: you ask for a larger edit, come back later, and find the session halted by "usage limit reached" with files half-rewritten and no longer running. Anthropic has acknowledged that stopping work abruptly in an incomplete state was not a good experience. Paid plans carry two caps, one rolling every 5 hours and one weekly, shared between claude.ai chat and Claude Code, and hitting either one used to freeze the session on the spot.
The Wrap-Up Allowance is the response. When the 5-hour cap lands mid-response, Claude Code keeps going a little further, and the stop comes at one of three moments: the response ends naturally, the allowance is exhausted, or the tool stops itself. If the allowance runs out, it finishes the step already in progress and does not start the next one. The help page notes the allowance may not be enough to complete the work, and the amount, which varies by plan, is not published.
The practical picture differs by plan. Pro subscribers get a single use per week, and a second limit in the same week stops them as before; Max and Team Premium seats get it each time they hit the 5-hour cap, within the weekly limit. The allowance cannot be reserved, saved, or carried over, and Anthropic describes it as offered at its discretion and subject to change or withdrawal without notice. If the allowance runs out, /rate-limit-options lets users choose between waiting for the limit to reset, adding usage credits, or moving to a higher plan.
