Google to auto-convert Gemini's Gems into Skills from Nov 17

The shift is more than a rename. Under Gems, an assistant was something you picked from a sidebar list and then started a conversation with. Skills sit inside the ordinary chat, invoked by typing "/" followed by the skill's name — with "@" planned later — and Gemini can also apply them automatically based on what the conversation is about. Several skills can be combined in a single chat, which points to a more flexible way of working than the one-bot-per-conversation model.

Google is also phasing out capabilities along the way. Gems could embed a default tool such as Canvas or Deep Research; as of September 29, Skills cannot. Sharing with other users, adding files from Google Drive, and loading "Gemini Notebook" are likewise not supported yet, with Google saying they are planned. So some users may find the new feature does less than what they had, at least initially.

The timing is staggered by account type. Personal accounts move first on November 17, 2026, Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit plans follow in March 2027, and education in June 2027. That ordering, and the option to migrate manually beforehand, looks aimed at giving organizations time to prepare — though how smoothly shared or heavily used Gems survive the conversion is likely to be the real test.
