Andrej Karpathy joins Anthropic's pre-training team to lead AI-assisted research efforts

Karpathy, who co-founded OpenAI and previously led AI at Tesla, started this week at Anthropic working on pre-training under team lead Nick Joseph. He will start a team focused on using Claude to accelerate pre-training research.

Pre-training is the large-scale training phase responsible for giving Claude its core knowledge and capabilities; it is also one of the most expensive, compute-intensive phases of building a frontier model.

Anthropic also brought on Chris Rohlf to its frontier red team, which stress-tests advanced AI models against severe threats. Rohlf has more than 20 years of cybersecurity experience and previously worked at Yahoo's cybersecurity team and at Meta for six years.
