Anthropic adds $200 monthly API credits to Max 20x

Anthropic adds $200 monthly API credits to Max 20x

3 Key Points

  1. What happened

Anthropic added monthly API credits to its Claude Max and Team plans — Max 5x gets $100 a month, Max 20x gets $200, and Team gets $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat.

  2. Why it matters

Until now, a Max or Team subscription and pay-as-you-go Claude API billing were separate contracts, so subscribers had to pay again for API calls from their own programs.

WHO IT HITSDevelopers and small teams paying for both a Claude Max or Team subscription and separately metered Claude API usage can now offset part of that API bill. Because a linked organization's credits are shared, whoever holds API keys in a company organization draws from the same balance.

Context & Analysis

The new credits address a long-standing split in how Anthropic customers pay. A claude.ai subscription covered chat and everyday Claude Code use, while calling the Claude API from your own program ran on metered billing through the Claude Console — a completely separate contract. The monthly credits route part of the subscription fee back toward that API side, and the author notes they are separate from the plan's usage limits, so the amount available for chat and Claude Code is not reduced.

Setup has friction worth knowing about. If you have never used the Console, you have to create and then link an organization, and a linked organization cannot be changed by yourself — you would need to contact support. Linking requires an Owner, Admin or Billing role in the Console organization, and on Team plans the link is made by the Primary Owner or an Owner from Organization settings, then Billing. Cards are not required to claim the credits, and in the author's Max 20x account $200.00 appeared on the Console dashboard after linking.

The monthly credits also sit alongside other credit types rather than replacing them. Credits you buy yourself are consumed after the monthly ones, and for organizations with no purchased credits and no auto-reload, the API simply stops until the next grant instead of being charged as extra against the plan. The author also distinguishes these from the one-time $250 cloud session credits covered in an earlier installment, which appear under Usage in claude.ai settings and apply only to running Claude Code in the cloud.

FAQ
How do I receive these monthly API credits?
From claude.ai, go to Settings, then Billing, then "API credits," and link one Claude Console organization. The credits are not granted unless you link an organization.
What can the credits be used for, and what is excluded?
They cover the Claude API (Messages API and Batches API), the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. They cannot be used for Claude Code used interactively (terminal, IDE, desktop app or web), plan Extra usage, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry.
Do the credits roll over if I don't use them?
No. There is no carryover, so any unused balance is lost rather than moved to the next month, and credits for a month in which linking was delayed are gone as well.
Which plans are eligible?
Only Max and Team, including discounted Team plans. Free, Pro and Enterprise are not included, and the plan must have been in use for at least 7 days.
