Anthropic taps Musk's Colossus 1 supercomputer as 80× growth strains its infrastructure

Anthropic announced an agreement with SpaceXAI to use the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, giving the company access to more than 300 megawatts of capacity and roughly 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. According to The New York Times, Anthropic is taking all of Colossus 1's computing capacity.

CEO Dario Amodei revealed that Anthropic had planned for roughly tenfold growth this year but is instead on a trajectory that could make it 80 times bigger. The company's annualized revenue run rate climbed from $9 billion at the end of 2025 to more than $30 billion, driven partly by Claude Code, with developers spending at least 20 hours per week on the tool on average.

The deal marks a reversal after Musk called Anthropic 'misanthropic' and 'evil' earlier this year. Musk now states he spent time with Anthropic's senior team and was impressed with their work to ensure Claude is good for humanity. For SpaceXAI, ahead of its planned IPO as soon as next month, the arrangement provides a paying enterprise customer and a narrative around partnering on orbital AI compute capacity.
