Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI agree to let US government review AI models before public release

Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI have agreed to allow the Commerce Department's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) to perform pre-deployment evaluations of new AI models before they are released publicly.

CAISI, which began evaluating models from OpenAI and Anthropic in 2024, has performed 40 reviews so far. The center will conduct what it describes as 'pre-deployment evaluations and targeted research to better assess frontier AI capabilities.'

OpenAI and Anthropic have renegotiated their existing partnerships with CAISI to align with priorities in President Donald Trump's AI Action Plan, according to Bloomberg.
