Anonymous coding model Ox Alpha appears, origin unknown

The emergence of Ox Alpha highlights a growing practice among AI labs: previewing frontier models anonymously to gather real-world usage data without the reputational risk of a formal launch. Z.ai Co. did exactly this with GLM-5, which ran on OpenRouter as Pony Alpha ahead of its release. GLM-5.3 shipped Aug. 14, six days before Ox Alpha turned up, which aligns with the fingerprinting evidence.

The stakes are unusually high because of the U.S. Commerce Department's Jan. 16, 2025, Entity List rule, which said listed companies including Zhipu AI advance China's military modernization through advanced AI research. Zhipu AI is Z.ai's former name. If the attribution holds, enterprise code is flowing to a provider with no name attached, and nobody sending it can check where it lands.

Unclecode's modelprint tool is careful about what it proves: matching fingerprints show shared infrastructure, not identity, since a lab can serve two models on the same stack. Other testers point to Xiaomi Corp.'s MiMo team, which has previewed unbranded models, or suggest the tokenizer behavior points to cl100k_base, an encoding from OpenAI Group PBC that sits oddly on a Chinese model. The identity question remains unresolved, but usage has not slowed, with billions of tokens pushed through the model since Thursday.
