Novo Nordisk names AWS as AI partner in drug discovery push

The partnership marks a shift for Novo Nordisk from using AI for administrative efficiency to applying it at the core of drug research. The company has already seen productivity gains for over 25,000 employees through its existing relationship with AWS, and this new agreement aims to extend that into the science itself. By connecting genomic, imaging, and clinical data, the hope is that early discoveries can better inform clinical trial design and help researchers drop weak candidates sooner.

However, the lack of disclosed financial terms or quantified targets makes it hard for investors to judge the near-term payoff. Berenberg recently lowered Novo Nordisk's price target to DKK 400 while keeping a Buy rating, suggesting that the market is still weighing the upside of AI against the inherent uncertainty of pharma R&D. Even if AI accelerates target identification, the most expensive and unpredictable part of drug development—proving safety and efficacy in clinical trials—remains untouched by this technology.
