Slingshot Insurance emerged from stealth with $27 million in seed funding co-led by Rally Ventures and Skyward Group, with insurance veteran Jim Hays joining its board.
Why it matters
The capital backs a six-person startup using AI to cut the administrative cost of offering inexpensive policies, a model that can be hard to run profitably at low premiums.
WHO IT HITSThe funding targets vertical SaaS companies—software makers serving a single industry—that want to add small insurance policies at checkout without building insurance operations themselves.

Slingshot's launch comes as vertical SaaS companies look for revenue beyond traditional subscription fees. The startup argues that embedded insurance—coverage offered at the point of another purchase—can be a largely untapped opportunity to generate incremental revenue from transactions already happening on those platforms. But the insurance and regulatory landscape is complex, and most SaaS companies lack the expertise, industry relationships or understanding of where to begin, according to CEO Ethan Genteman. Slingshot aims to provide a white-glove service that helps those companies go from an insurance product idea to a fully operational offering.
The difficulties facing Slingshot's first customer helped bring the startup together. Vertical Insure, which Rally had already helped start, had opportunities to introduce more products but struggled to find insurers whose technology and processes could keep up. Even after finding an insurer willing to back a product, connecting the two companies' systems could create more delays. Slingshot was built to address those problems, with Vertical Insure helping shape its product as a design partner. Its software connects policy distributors and insurers directly, replacing spreadsheets, emails and disconnected systems with automation that keeps a record of decisions.
Rally Ventures co-founded Slingshot as part of a broader approach; it has co-founded roughly eight portfolio companies that have either launched or remain in stealth. For Justin Kaufenberg, managing director at Rally Ventures, the opportunity is familiar: before joining Rally, he ran SportsEngine, where insurance sold through its software became a key revenue source. He said founders increasingly want insurance partners that can help them introduce coverage quickly. Slingshot's six-person team formally began operating July 1, and the company is also pursuing an acquisition that would allow it to back policies itself—Genteman said it is not a carrier yet but is rapidly closing on one.
