Gross has spent his career trying to scale entrepreneurship through Idealab, the incubator he launched in 1996 that has produced more than 175 companies. Idealab.ai is an attempt to apply that same model at software scale: instead of nurturing a handful of ventures at a time, the platform exposes a vast searchable set of ideas to anyone for free.
The system behind it draws on Gross's long-standing framework for spotting opportunities, including unmet needs, enabling technologies, and market shifts such as regulatory or cultural changes. Gross says the quality of recent AI models, which he calls Fable and GPT-6, was the essential ingredient that made the output usable rather than gibberish.
Beyond idea search, Gross is developing a "periodic table of business functions" to guide users through operating a company, and he plans versions that connect founders to funders and partners. He has also removed about 100,000 ideas that could be deployed to do harm, acknowledging AI's destructive potential even as he bets on its power to spur positive entrepreneurship.
