Microsoft retires Mico avatar from Copilot voice mode

However, the character's short lifespan reflects the common pattern Microsoft has faced with virtual assistants over the past two decades: Clippy, Cortana, and Rover all arrived with similar ambitions and failed to sustain user engagement. Microsoft's own support page acknowledges this candidly, stating that "Mico helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk with AI," suggesting the experiment was largely a research exercise rather than a permanent product direction. The removal also coincides with organizational changes that transferred Copilot oversight to Jacob Andreou while Suleyman moved to focus on developing new AI models—a transition that appears to have deprioritized the avatar approach in favor of other directions.
