Snowflake CoCo expands with desktop app, cost controls, and mobile preview

Snowflake announced a major expansion of its CoCo AI platform, releasing new tools and capabilities designed to help organizations scale AI adoption while maintaining control over costs and governance. The company's approach centers on three principles: visibility into AI spending, optimization through efficient model routing and configuration, and control via per-user quotas and automated alerts.

CoCo Desktop, now generally available for macOS and Windows, is a native desktop application that arrives pre-configured with the user's Snowflake environment. Developers open the application to find their catalog, role-based access controls, and governance policies already active—eliminating the setup overhead that general-purpose AI tools require. The desktop experience includes integrated access to local files, repositories, terminals, and a built-in browser, purpose-built for modern data development. Cloud Agents, also now generally available in Snowsight, bring equivalent capabilities to the web browser without requiring local installation; users can now search the web, execute shell commands, and run Python scripts directly in Snowsight, running inside isolated, Snowflake-managed containers.

On the governance and cost front, Snowflake released AI cost governance capabilities in public preview, including per-user quotas and quota enforcement that leverage the company's existing role-based access controls. A new Agent Settings feature, also in public preview, lets administrators choose default models and roll out a single configuration across their teams without requiring individual setup. Snowflake's tagging framework allows organizations to attribute AI consumption to cost centers or business units, simplifying chargeback. The company reports that its own heavy internal CoCo CLI usage recently achieved ~28% cost reduction per prompt on the same model and tasks with no quality loss. Customers using CoCo have seen average cost-per-prompt reductions of ~20% in recent weeks, attributed to efficiency improvements including REPL-based tool calling, leaner context management, and lighter-weight subagents.

Looking ahead, CoCo Mobile for iOS and Android entered private preview, extending the platform to mobile devices while maintaining the same governance model. Skills and Plugins Sharing, coming to public preview soon, will allow teams to publish, discover, and securely share reusable workflows through a governed catalog, reducing institutional knowledge silos. The Cortex Agents REST API will also enter public preview soon, enabling teams to build custom applications on top of CoCo's capabilities. Together, these announcements aim to eliminate the trade-off between innovation and governance, allowing enterprises to scale AI adoption with confidence in cost predictability and security.

Snowflake is positioning CoCo as an enterprise-grade AI platform designed to address the governance and cost challenges that emerge when organizations scale AI beyond individual productivity use. The core insight—that governance must be built in from the start, not bolted on later—shapes the product roadmap: AI cost visibility, per-user controls, and role-based configuration are now foundational rather than afterthoughts.

The platform's efficiency gains matter because they decouple AI adoption from cost growth.
