Reframe Systems raises $40M to scale robotic homebuilding

Reframe Systems, founded by former Amazon Robotics leaders in 2022, is tackling the U.S. housing shortage by industrializing home construction with robotics and software. The company's model involves a network of microfactories that can adapt to local zoning, climate, and architectural needs, potentially making homebuilding faster and more cost-effective. The $40 million funding round, led by Energy Impact Partners, will support expansion across North America, including the opening of FAB1 in Billerica, Mass., which is expected to achieve full factory readiness in 70 days.

Reframe's approach has already delivered 10 homes, including a triple-decker in Somerville completed in 180 days and wildfire-resilient bungalows in Altadena, helping families rebuild in months instead of years. The company's goal to build one million homes by 2040, five years ahead of schedule, underscores its ambition to scale this model. However, the success will depend on continued deployment and the ability to learn from each project, as noted by CEO Vikas Enti. The funding and new factory are steps toward that goal, but the long-term impact on the housing crisis remains to be seen.
