Microsoft releases GridSFM, a foundation model designed to address $20 billion in annual power grid congestion losses

On May 13, Microsoft released GridSFM, a foundation model for solving AC Optimal power flow problems in transmission power grids. The model is positioned to address $20 billion in annual congestion losses.

GridSFM approximates optimal power flow in milliseconds and gives operators visibility into congestion stability and system health. It can evaluate orders of magnitude more scenarios in real time, enabling shift from reactive responses to proactive optimization.

On May 8, Microsoft released an open US grid dataset for power research that powers the GridSFM model. The public dataset provides policymakers, developers, and researchers a common starting point for understanding grid bottlenecks.
