Amazon commits up to $20B to Anthropic, betting its cloud business on a rival AI startup

Amazon announced an initial $5 billion investment in Anthropic (an AI safety company founded by former OpenAI researchers), with the option to invest up to $20 billion more over time. In return, Anthropic will use Amazon's AWS cloud infrastructure to train and run its Claude AI models.

Unlike partnerships where one company simply buys another's product, this deal locks Anthropic into AWS exclusively—meaning Anthropic's AI will run on Amazon's servers rather than competitors like Microsoft or Google. For AWS customers, this makes Claude (a text-generating AI similar to ChatGPT) available natively within their existing Amazon cloud accounts.

AWS sales teams now have a differentiated product to compete directly against Microsoft's OpenAI partnership and Google Cloud's Gemini offerings. For businesses already on AWS, Claude becomes another tool in their cloud toolkit without switching providers; for Anthropic, this removes the pressure to build its own data centers, letting it focus on AI research instead.
