SpaceX acquisition bid for Cognition denied; CEO says startup 'not for sale'

SpaceX's reported acquisition attempt reflects the company's aggressive pivot into AI as a core business pillar. Musk has explicitly committed to transforming SpaceX's economics around AI over the next four to five years, stating that AI will represent 99% of the company's value. To achieve this, SpaceX has been acquiring AI capabilities and infrastructure: the company acquired xAI earlier this year, which then went public in June with a peak market capitalization near $2.3 trillion, and closed a $60 billion acquisition of Cursor, another AI coding startup, just last week.

Cognition represents an attractive target in this context because AI-assisted coding has emerged as one of the clearest monetization paths for AI technology. Anthropic's rapid growth, driven substantially by Claude Code, demonstrates the market potential. Cursor's integration with SpaceX proved immediate: the two jointly released Grok 4.6 this month, which scores higher on coding and agentic task benchmarks. Adding Cognition and its established enterprise customer base would have deepened SpaceX's competitive position against OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the enterprise AI space.

Despite the reported acquisition bid and its denial, Bloomberg indicates that SpaceX and Cognition may still explore collaboration—potentially involving Cognition's use of SpaceX's computing capacity, which the company currently sells to other AI players including Anthropic. This suggests that even without an acquisition, the companies see strategic value in alignment. Cognition remains one of the largest independent AI software coding startups not yet acquired by a major AI model maker, having raised $1 billion at a $25 billion post-money valuation in late May and now reportedly in early talks for funding at a $40 billion valuation.
