Google shuts down Project Mariner, folding its web-task capabilities into other AI products

Project Mariner, an experimental feature that performed tasks across the web, was shut down on May 4th, 2026. Google first revealed the project in December 2024 and had announced an update allowing it to perform up to 10 tasks at a time.

Google has integrated Project Mariner's agentic capabilities (technology enabling AI to make decisions and act autonomously) into Gemini Agent and AI Mode, Google's AI-powered search feature. Gemini Agent can perform tasks like archiving emails or booking hotels on users' behalf.

Google has also rolled out "auto-browse," a feature that can perform multi-step tasks in Chrome, such as researching flight costs, though the company has not stated whether it is powered by Project Mariner.
