Google AI plans to bundle Colab paid perks, GPU access

Colab has until now lived mainly as its own paid product, sold either by usage or through the monthly Colab Pro and Colab Pro+ plans, which bundle extra compute, higher-performance GPUs, expanded Gemini usage, and background code execution. Google's September 22 announcement moves those same benefits into the consumer Google AI subscription tiers — Plus, Pro, and Ultra — rather than leaving them as a separate purchase.

The emphasis in Google's own description is on long-running work: background execution and access to higher-performance GPUs, which the company says let users train models for long stretches with the tab closed. That framing points at users who currently keep a browser session open to babysit a training job, and who might otherwise pay for Colab on its own.

The practical outcome hinges on the rollout, which Google says will happen gradually over the coming weeks, and on whether every listed benefit reaches each of the three Google AI tiers. Whether subscribers treat Colab Pro and Colab Pro+ as redundant once the perks land is likely to depend on those details rather than on the announcement itself.
