
What happened
RealSense announced the D585 Pro, a depth camera combining 3D vision sensing, edge AI acceleration (processing that runs directly on the camera), and software-defined capabilities. The camera is expected to begin shipping in Q1 2027. It features a sub-15cm minimum range at full resolution, 120×100° field of view at 60 FPS, and delivers more than 2x better depth quality than the previous generation of RealSense cameras.
Why it matters
RealSense became an independent company in July 2025 after Intel's spinout (funded with $50 million(約80億円)), securing the long-term future of one of the most widely used 3D vision platforms in robotics. The D585 Pro's on-device AI processing reduces reliance on host computing resources, enabling robots like humanoids, autonomous mobile robots, and inspection systems to make faster decisions without external servers.
What to watch
The D585 Pro is built around a custom Gen 5 system-on-chip with dedicated AI accelerators and can operate from under 15 centimeters to more than 10 meters indoors or outdoors. Planned SDK releases will add capabilities such as Visual-Inertial Odometry, occupancy grid generation, auto-calibration, and face detection via software update after general availability, allowing existing D585 hardware to gain new abilities without hardware replacement.
