OpenAI files for IPO and calls for international coordination to slow frontier AI development

OpenAI filed for an IPO and stated it had 'not decided on timing yet.' Rival Anthropic also filed for an IPO. Both companies' offerings, along with SpaceX's, are expected to be among the biggest in history.

CEO Sam Altman called for an international body to 'coordinate leading AI efforts to reduce catastrophic risk,' including 'slowing frontier development when needed.' Anthropic said an option to 'slow or temporarily pause' AI research would be wise.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Google DeepMind's CEO both stated this year that a 'slower pace' would be safer, but said they were unable to slow down unilaterally.
