What happened
Crunchbase says 29 companies joined its Unicorn Board in August, adding around $63 billion in value, with XPeng Robotics valued at more than $6.3 billion and Lumilens at $5.5 billion.
Why it matters
More than a third of August's new unicorns were under 3 years old, and 16 of the 29 were U.S.-based versus four from China, showing how fast young AI and chip startups now reach $1 billion valuations.
What to watch
Whether the pace continues, given nine companies left the board in August — three through IPOs including Unitree Robotics, and six via acquisition including Hugging Face, OpenRouter and Airtable.
WHO IT HITSThis lands on venture investors and startup founders tracking which sectors are minting billion-dollar private companies, and on later-stage funds and acquirers who now face a crop of very young, highly valued AI software and semiconductor targets.

The August cohort shows AI spreading well beyond model makers into everyday business functions. New unicorns include AI assistants, agentic workflow tools, code review, voice transcription and enterprise resource planning — with River AI raising $1.1 billion for training custom models on proprietary data, and Wispr Flow, CodeRabbit and HappyRobot each closing nine-figure rounds.
Semiconductors were the second-largest sector with five new unicorns, spanning Lumilens' photonic interconnects, DEEPX's edge processors and FangQing's inference chips. The geographic spread was broad: Nigeria and Indonesia each produced their first new unicorn of the year, while Turkey, Switzerland, Germany, South Korea and Singapore also added one each.
What the numbers hinge on is how long these valuations hold. Nine companies left the board in August — Unitree Robotics via IPO, and Hugging Face, OpenRouter and Airtable through acquisition — so the board is a revolving door as much as a scoreboard. For the youngest entrants, the test is likely whether their products reach paying customers before another funding round is needed.
