Google、NotebookLMを「Gemini Notebook」に改称

Google announced on July 16 that it will rename NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, strengthening its integration within the Gemini ecosystem. The product itself remains fundamentally unchanged, but it will now live within the Gemini app and make its core capabilities available across Google's broader platform.

NotebookLM debuted at Google I/O in 2023 as "Project Tailwind." It is an AI tool that allows users to upload sources—web pages, documents, and other materials—and then ask the AI to generate insights, summaries, and analyses grounded in those sources. Unlike conventional chatbots, NotebookLM is designed to keep responses tethered to user-provided content, making it well-suited for education, research, and professional work. Google reports that over 3 million users across 60+ industries now use the tool.

Jamie Woodward, a Google Labs biased programming lead, explained the company's thinking: the rename reflects Gemini's role as Google's broader AI portfolio brand, and Gemini Notebook will now offer note-taking and access from within a single experience. Google further stated that the product should "support AI leaders in pushing notebooks forward in the AI era."

An update rolling out in June will accelerate the integration. Each notebook will gain dedicated cloud computing infrastructure, enabling AI to write and execute code against source data, so outputs become possible across formats. This update will first reach users on "Google AI Ultra" and those with "AI Ultra Access" or "AI Expanded Access" on Workspace products; within weeks, the capability will roll out to Web Pro users. Beyond code execution, the June update extends output support to charts, spreadsheets (xlsx), slides (pptx), and PDFs. The NotebookLM team also signaled that folder functionality is coming, and noted that the company's commitment to the product—rooted in its AI portfolio strategy—remains unchanged.

NotebookLM has grown significantly since its announcement as "Project Tailwind" at Google I/O 2023. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, it anchors responses to user-provided sources—uploaded documents or web pages—making it suited for research, learning, and professional analysis. The tool has accumulated a substantial user base of over 3 million across diverse sectors, reflecting demand for grounded, source-based AI assistance.

The rename to Gemini Notebook signals Google's strategy to position this specialized tool within its broader Gemini AI platform. By integrating it into the Gemini app ecosystem and bundling key features across Google's product suite, the company aims to make notebook-based AI research more accessible to Workspace users. The June update introduces technical depth—cloud-backed code execution—that expands the tool beyond document analysis into development workflows. This move suggests Google sees Gemini Notebook not as a standalone product but as a component of its larger AI assistant offering.
